Philosophy for Children

The modern Philosophy for Children (P4C) movement originated in the 70’s with philosophy professor Matthew Lipman at Montclair State College and finds earlier roots in the writings of philosopher John Dewey. With the hope of fostering a more democratic democracy, in which all citizens are prepared and empowered to engage in public life, the movement teaches PK – 12 students how to reason philosophically and participate in a community of inquiry. In addition to this laudable long-term goal, the P4C curriculum enhances students’ school experience and inner lives by strengthening peer relationships and introducing them to a rich field of inquiry. Today P4C is found in more than 60 countries and has been demonstrated to improve students’ math and reading scores as well as other cognitive and affective skills. Madison Public Philosophy is thrilled to share the movement with the Madison community and has met a warm reception.
