Exchange, Appreciation, Appropriation or Assimilation

What is cultural appropriation? Is it a real or useful concept? How is it different from cultural appreciation, assimilation, and exchange? Madison Public Philosophy and Sound Out Loud are teaming up to present an interactive discussion that addresses these questions and more. The discussion will be held three times: Monday, October 23 at 7:00 PM at Lathrop Hall (1002 University Avenue); Saturday, October 28 at 1:30 PM at the American Family Insurance’s DreamBank (1 N. Pinckney Street); and Sunday, October 29 at 2:30 PM at the Arts + Literature Laboratory (2021 Winnebago Street).

Audience members will hear live music performed by Sound Out Loud accompanied by historical analysis from UW-Madison musicologist Andrea Fowler. After the performances, Madison Public Philosophy will lead a discussion about the examples. The audience will work together to determine which (if any) of the following categories the examples fall into: exchange, appropriation, appreciation, and assimilation.
